Yamaha SLG200S Silent Guitar Review and Demo (2024)

The Yamaha SLG200S is a silent, disassembling guitar that looks stunning. It’s a great acoustic-electric guitar, especially for practice sessions. It has a much lower natural volume due to the unique design but has all the benefits of an electric guitar and sounds amazing when plugged in.

Practicing is essential to mastering an instrument, but not everyone has access to ideal practice conditions. The Yamaha SLG200S is perfect for guitarists looking for a quality practice guitar with a lower natural volume.

I got the SLG200S myself in hopes of testing it and providing general and unbiased feedback. Check out my detailed review and demo in the video below and see how this guitar sounds:

Verdict

The Yamaha SLG200S is a high-quality, disassembling, silent guitar that is great for practice sessions and traveling musicians. It has striking aesthetic appeal and can be used for live performances due to the built-in electronics.

Pros

  • Great-sounding guitar
  • Easy and simple controls
  • Lightweight and unique design
  • The neck profile mimics a premium guitar

Cons

  • Weirdly-placed guitar input
  • The frame gets loose with time
  • Pricey

Design & Playability

The Yamaha SLG200S is called silent because it lacks a top and back, so the string amplitude is lower than on a classic acoustic guitar, therefore the sound output is lower. It’s really unique and looks amazing when you first see it. Not only that, but it’s quite portable due to the disassembling nature of this guitar.

It’s made out of high-quality materials. It has a Maple frame, a rosewood fingerboard, and a mahogany neck. In spite of the weird design, its playability is actually good and it delivers really well performance-wise.

Electronics

The SLG200S is a hybrid (acoustic-electric) guitar. This means that it does have built-in electronics. It sports an SRT (Studio Response Technology) preamp for high-quality sound that simulates the sound of an actual acoustic guitar recorded in a professional studio.

In addition to an on/off switch, the unit features a volume dial, a treble dial, a bass dial, and an aux dial. There are even two reverbs and one chorus effect on the onboard effects dial, as well as a chromatic tuner. All in all, really well put together.

Sound

The natural sound of the SLG200S is significantly lower compared to a regular acoustic guitar. This is, in my opinion, a really useful feature that makes it highly sought-after by guitarists looking for a practice instrument.

When plugged in, you get a clear acoustic sound and you can hardly tell the difference from a conventional acoustic one. This also means that you can use this for live performances. If you want to hear how it sounds, you can do so with the link below:

Connectivity

The Yamaha SLG200S is powered by an adapter or 2 AA batteries. In terms of connectivity options, it has a Line out, an auxiliary input, and a headphone jack. Basically, this guitar can be connected to headphones, external speakers, or an amplifier.

Price

In terms of price, the SLG200S has a rather steep price tag. It is considered a premium guitar, especially due to its unique design and overall audio quality. However, in terms of design, controls, and features, it makes up for it. It is a rather unique guitar to have around so the price range isn’t that surprising when you think about it.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Great-sounding guitar
  • Easy and simple controls
  • Lightweight and unique design
  • The neck profile mimics a premium guitar

Cons

  • Weirdly-placed guitar input
  • The frame gets loose with time
  • Pricey

Verdict

Overall, the Yamaha SLG200S is a striking acoustic-electric guitar that has a lower natural volume. The sound quality you get is worthy of the price tag and the design is like no other. For guitarists looking for a quality practice instrument that will not disturb your neighbors or your family, this guitar is the perfect choice to have around. The built-in electronics are great and you can use this guitar for live performances if you wish to do so.
