LIVE NOTE
-

Sing a steady, comfortable vowel.

Hold a note for a moment before saving it. The detector needs a clear, sustained pitch.

Use these reference tones to match notes without a microphone.

Microphone access needs HTTPS or localhost. No recording is made or uploaded.

How to measure your singing range

Warm up gently, then sing down a note at a time until you reach the lowest note you can repeat clearly. Repeat upwards for your highest comfortable note. Save those two notes with the controls above, or choose them manually using the reference tones.

Your useful range is the part you can sing with control and a consistent sound. A fleeting squeak or a strained low note is less helpful when choosing songs. Measure your everyday voice and any falsetto range separately, and stop if singing feels uncomfortable.

What the result means

The span counts the semitone steps between your endpoints. Twelve semitones make an octave. This result does not assign a voice type: tessitura, tone, register transitions and training also matter. Middle C is shown as C4 here.

Getting a reliable microphone reading

Use a quiet room, sing one note at a time, and keep the microphone a short distance away. Background music, breath noise and strong overtones can confuse pitch detection, sometimes by an octave. Check unexpected readings against the reference tones. Headphones keep reference tones out of the microphone.

Using the Vocal Range Finder

Find a comfortable range for choosing songs and practice material. Use notes you can sing steadily; a strained note that you can reach once is not necessarily a useful singing limit.

Instructions

  1. Choose Lowest comfortable note and Highest comfortable note manually. Hear low note and Hear high note play references you can match by ear.
  2. For microphone assistance, click Use microphone and allow access. Sing one sustained note and wait for a stable note reading.
  3. Click Set as lowest or Set as highest, then repeat at the other end of your range. Use Stop microphone and Stop tone when finished.

Reading your vocal range

C3 to C5 spans 24 semitones, or two octaves. The result describes the notes you entered, rather than assigning a voice type. Your comfortable range can change with warm-up, vowel, volume and the way you produce the note.

What to do if the range looks wrong

  • Check the octave numbers as well as the letters. C4 and C5 have the same name but are an octave apart.
  • If the detector jumps between notes, stop other sounds, sing more steadily and move nearer the microphone. You can enter the notes manually instead.
  • Make sure the low note is below the high note. Do not push your voice just to increase the displayed range.

Use this as a starting point for finding a suitable key, then sing the whole song to check whether it sits comfortably. Microphone audio stays in your browser.
