How to use a pitch reference tone
Choose a note and octave, check your device volume, then press Play tone. The generator uses equal temperament, with A4 set to 440 Hz by default. You can change the A4 reference between 400 and 480 Hz when a different tuning standard is needed. Changing a note or waveform stops playback so you can restart with the new setting.
What the frequency display means
The displayed frequency is the calculated target for the synthesized tone. Your device's audio output, speakers and listening environment affect what you hear. This tool provides a listening reference; it does not measure the pitch of your instrument. Sine waves sound smooth, while brighter waveforms contain more harmonics and may be easier to hear on small speakers.
Using the Pitch Reference Tone Generator
Play a reference note when you need a starting pitch for singing, tuning by ear or comparing an interval. Start at a comfortable playback volume.
Instructions
- Choose Note and Octave, then check A4 tuning (Hz). Leave it at 440 unless you need another reference.
- Choose Waveform and Volume. Press Play tone to hear the displayed frequency.
- Press Stop when finished. Changing the note or waveform stops playback, so press Play tone again for the new setting.
Checking a reference pitch
With A4 set to 440 Hz, C4 is approximately 261.63 Hz. A higher octave doubles a note's frequency. Sine gives a smooth sound; brighter waveforms include harmonics, so their character changes even though the chosen note stays the same.
What to do if you cannot hear the tone
- Press Play tone after changing a setting and check the device's selected speaker or headphones.
- Check both the tool's Volume and your device volume. Start low and raise it gradually.
- If the note is outside your comfortable singing range, change Octave rather than forcing your voice to match it.
This generator plays a calculated note without using your microphone. It does not measure whether your instrument or voice matches the reference.
