Practice recognising chord qualities
Press Play new question to hear a synthesized chord, then choose its quality. Beginner practice alternates major and minor chords. Intermediate adds diminished, augmented and suspended second and fourth chords. Advanced also includes dominant seventh, major seventh, minor seventh, half-diminished seventh and diminished seventh chords.
Together plays every note at once. Arpeggio plays the notes from low to high. These exercises use root-position chords and a randomly chosen root pitch. Real recordings can include inversions, different voicings and instruments, which can make the same chord quality sound different.
Review your chord ear training score
The score counts one answer per question. Feedback highlights the correct chord quality, and Replay lets you hear it again. Reset score starts a fresh session; changing difficulty also clears the score. Start with major and minor chords before adding more choices.
Using the Chord Ear Trainer
Listen for the character of a chord rather than trying to guess its root note. Begin with major and minor, then add more chord qualities as your confidence improves.
Instructions
- Choose Difficulty, Playback and a comfortable Volume.
- Press Play new question and select the chord quality you hear. Use Replay if you need another listen.
- Review the feedback before starting another question. Stop ends playback and Reset score clears your session score.
Using the chord feedback
Major and minor triads differ in their third, which changes the sound even when the root is the same. Together plays all chord tones at once; Arpeggio separates them from low to high. Each question uses one scored answer, so the percentage reflects your first attempts.
What to do if the chords sound too similar
- Try Arpeggio to hear the individual notes, then return to Together to recognize the complete sound.
- Start with Beginner rather than guessing among many seventh-chord choices. Changing Difficulty also resets the score.
- Check playback volume and headphones if the lowest tone is difficult to hear through a small speaker.
Use the exercises for regular listening practice. The examples use root-position synthesized chords; inversions and real instrumental sounds can make familiar qualities harder to recognize.
