The Eventide SP2016 — a brief history
The SP2016 Reverb plug-in is based on a classic hardware device of the same name. Introduced in 1982, the Eventide SP2016 was the first programmable effects box on the market. This unit was all the rage with top-shelf engineers, including Dave Pensado, George Massenburg, Alan Sides, Roy Hendrickson, Jack Douglas, and Mick Guzauski. Its natural, yet distinctive, sounds can be heard on countless hits from the likes of Talking Heads, Adele, Mariah Carey, Eminem, and more. The original SP2016 has the distinction of having introduced the concept of plug-ins to the pro audio world, by employing hardware chips that users plugged in under the hood.
Loaded with 6 distinct reverbs
With the Eventide SP2016 Reverb in your plug-in folder, you'll have access to six great-sounding reverbs. Benefit from authentic emulations of the hardware SP2016's Room, Stereo Room, and Hi-Density Plate algorithms. These reverbs are spot on, right down to the bit depth. Beyond that, you get Modern versions of each that deliver brighter and more diffuse sounds, and employ a higher bit depth. You'll appreciate the excellent sound quality of these reverbs. From their complex early reflections, to the natural density increases of their echoes, to the smooth Gaussian decay of their reverb tails, these algorithms are sure to inject your mixes with that "special something."
Controls for fine-tuning your reverb
Crafting the perfect reverb is a breeze with the SP2016. This plug-in's Parameters section gives you everything you need for fine-tuning your effect, including Mix, PreDelay, Decay, Position, and Diffusion controls. Beyond that, you get an EQ section for shaping your reverb's frequency content. At Sweetwater, we're particularly impressed by the SP2016 Reverb's Position control. With it, you can take your listener from the back of the room to right in front of the performer, all while retaining all of your other settings. Getting reverb to sit in a mix has never been easier!
Algorithms:
Each algorithm is available in Vintage and Modern versions
- Room is a basic, no-frills ambient room. It's a mono effect with stereo outputs. Its extreme range of pre-delay makes it ideal for reverberant doubling and single echoes.
- Stereo Room re-creates the ambience of a large concert hall with clear, natural-sounding reverberation. It's ideal for vocals, drums, acoustic guitar, strings, and horns.
- Hi-Density Plate is a plate-type reverb with dual pickups simulating the effect of a bigger, heavier plate. Use it to add size and brightness to vocals, guitar, or percussive instruments.
