Experience top-shelf sound quality, by way of the Apollo x8p’s upgraded elite-class AD/DA conversion and Dual Crystal clocking. Pro users will appreciate native 7.1 surround monitoring support, selectable +24dBu operation, built-in talkback, and more. Eight Unison preamps allow you to track through models of the industry's most legendary hardware. Beyond that, you get sub-2ms latency and ample expandability, thanks to the Apollo x8p’s ultra-fast Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. The Apollo x8p Heritage Edition comes with a premium suite of 10 award-winning plug-in titles, along with the Realtime Analog Classics Plus bundle, arming you with accurate emulations of vintage analog hardware. Finally, the Apollo x8p boasts compatibility with UA’s LUNA software, giving you a tightly integrated recording, editing, and mixing environment, with full software-based control over your interface’s parameters, global console and tape emulations, and advanced real-time tracking. If there was ever a time to upgrade to the newest Apollo, now’s the time!

Track and mix with powerful HEXA Core processing

There are times when your computer doesn’t have enough power and speed to run all the plug-ins your recording session requires. That’s where UA's powerful 6-core HEXA Core processor comes in. This processor yields 50% more power than the previous generation. This means that you can track in real time with Neve, Manley, or API channel strips, or run large UAD plug-in counts while mixing in your DAW. The engineers here at Sweetwater appreciate being able to inject guitars with the tube warmth of a Pultec EQ, add the musical limiting of an LA-2A to a vocal, and pump up drums with an 1176 or Fairchild 670 — all in real time. It’s the closest thing to having the real hardware.

Computer not included.

Elite-class AD/DA conversion offers ultra-pristine sound

Apollos have always sounded great, but the Apollo x8p’s AD/DA conversion takes it to the next level. When they were designing the latest generation of Apollos, UA engineers auditioned the latest leading-edge AD/DA technology, ultimately pairing elite-class 24-bit/192kHz converters with overhauled analog circuitry. The result is an ultra-pristine signal path with 129dB dynamic range and –128dB THD+N. Beyond that, Dual Crystal clocking supplies a low-jitter environment for pure, artifact-free recording and solid stereo imaging. Dive in, and you’ll hear for it yourself — the Apollo x8p’s AD/DA rivals any high-end standalone converter on the market.

A bevy of pro-level features

You can find Apollos in professional studios worldwide. That said, users have been clamoring for certain pro-level features. Good news — Universal Audio has been listening! So what’s new? First of all, the Apollo x8p includes 7.1 surround monitoring support, complete with speaker calibration and fold-down. This is great news for engineers working on audio and music for video games, film, television, and the web. Beyond that, the Apollo x8p was tailor-made for your analog console and other high-end gear, courtesy of its selectable +24dBu operation. Thanks to these and other great features, the Apollo x8p makes a great centerpiece for any studio.

Capture the sound of legendary preamps with Unison technology

The Apollo x8p’s Unison preamp technology goes so far beyond traditional software modeling and emulations that it’s really in a category all its own. In essence, Unison is a bidirectional communication between the Apollo x8p’s mic preamp and a Unison-capable plug-in, such as the included 610-B plug-in that re-creates the sound of UA’s classic 610 tube preamp.

The plug-in actually adjusts the preamp circuit itself, including parameters such as impedance, analog gain structure, and much more. When you adjust the Apollo x8p’s preamp gain knob and physical controls, the plug-in adjusts the preamp’s behavior to match the target preamp. So you’re not simply filtering your audio to approximate the character of a famous preamp — your microphone is now interacting with the Apollo x8p’s input the same way it would behave with the “modeled” preamplifier.

UAD plug-ins astounded the recording world with their incredible ability to sound like analog processors, eliminating the need for large racks of gear in the studio. Unison preamp technology will do the same thing for your mic inputs, eliminating the need to collect and maintain expensive hardware preamps just for sonic variety.

Thunderbolt: ultra-low latency and unrivaled bandwidth

Thunderbolt is one of the most important technologies to impact audio production in years, and UA was one of the first to adopt it. Thanks to its blazing-fast connectivity, Thunderbolt offers lower latency and greater stability than USB or FireWire, clocking in with the speed and ultra-fast performance of a PCI Express system. In fact, the Apollo x8p’s Thunderbolt 3 connection runs projects with high track counts at latencies of less than 2ms! On top of that, multiple Apollo interfaces can be networked over Thunderbolt to add fast, high-bandwidth I/O and DSP to your studio. You don’t even need a brand-new computer — the Apollo x8p’s two built-in Thunderbolt 3 ports are backward-compatible with Thunderbolt 1 and 2 Macs (adapter sold separately).

Sensational plug-in bundle included!

UAD Powered Plug-ins have earned their reputation for being some of the most accurate emulations of analog audio equipment ever created. The astonishing processing power of the UAD platform is what makes these plug-ins sound so great. You simply can’t get the depth, color, and character these plug-ins have without devoting huge CPU resources to them. Best of all, Apollo x8p lets you record your audio through UAD plug-ins in real time with sub-2ms latency. When you buy the Apollo x8p Heritage Edition, you’ll receive a premium suite of 10 award-winning plug-in titles:

This is the S*** - And that's a good thing

I just bought one of these to daisy chain to my Apollo 8 for 16 tracks of simultaneous tracking. The UA Apollo platform represents history, it represents a mindset of intuitive operation combined with excellence, it represents value of the highest order. I am proud to be part of the UA family and am blown away every time I record with this gear. The plugins and Unison preamps are genius and EXTREME value. If you have the money to pony up to get into this platform, you will not be sorry. AND their customer support is actually responsive.

Next level for any type of recording

All I can say about the Apollo x8p is WOW. I've stepped to the next level of recording/mixing/mastering with this interface. The Unison preamps alone are outstanding and transparent, but drop in a Unison plug-in like a Neve 1073 or API channel strip and holy smokes, you're in the big leagues. For Mac users, LUNA is included, and I highly recommend it. It's the DAW I've been looking for a desiring ever since I converted from the analog realm to the digital realm in the mid 90s. I got a used Mac Book Pro just so I could use LUNA. UA will probably release a Windows version, but I'm honestly more in tune with the Mac for music tracking and production now.

Quality in show!

This product is a full blown monster right out of the box. It give its user the peace of mind that they've purchased a product of the highest calibre with enough processing power to provide them years of fun and reliability towards their musical goals. The only reason this product didnt recieve a full 5 stars was due to its lack of its flagship DAW (LUNA) not supporting the Windows platform. In my professional opinon, if a company (especially with UA's clout and recognition in the industry) offers their interface for both platforms, then their software should thusly do the same. While Im sure in time they would consider this for thier users, its still disappointing for the time being that I cant take FULL advantage of their product. I will gladly change my rating upon delivery of Luna!

A Big Step Up

I'm hoping this review will help someone who is at a similar stage that I am in the audio game. For years I had a fairly entry level 8 ch interface - it served me well and I learned everything I know about recording and mixing using it. For much of that time I was working in the basement of my old house - no sound treatment, poor acoustics, etc., so I didn't see the benefit of upgrading to a really nice interface. I then moved to a new house where I was able to build a studio in one of the rooms and put up full acoustic treatment. My recordings and mixes improved drastically, and then I finally reached a point where I felt my production quality had plateaued. I knew that upgrading my interface was the next step. I already had some nice mics, good monitors, and this was the last piece of the chain that needed an improvement. I also always wondered just how much of a difference an upgrade like this would make - how much better would the pre-amps and converters be vs what I already have that would justify the price. I finally took the leap and bought the x8p and I am absolutely amazed at the difference. The pre-amps have brought my Neumann mics to life (especially using the Unison technology with the various console channel strips) and they finally sound like the top of the line mics that they are. The AD/DA converters have blown me away and I couldn't believe how much having good converters makes a difference. Recordings sound full, detailed, have depth and clarity, and most of all, they sound musical. My old recordings always felt a bit dull, lifeless, sterile, and lacked a musical characteristic. Right off the bat, listening to a freshly tracked session without any mixing done on it yet, things sound way closer to where I want them to be which means less corrective work and a better quality mix in the end. Likewise, playing back audio, whether it be my own recordings or commercially released songs has been taken to a whole new level. Again, the converters reveal so much more detail, clarity, dimension, and depth in the playback - I'm hearing things in songs I've listened to 1000 times that I've never heard before. Audio sounds smooth across the whole frequency spectrum, and even at high volumes things are far more comfortable and less fatiguing to listen to. The interface itself looks and feels extremely well built - it is sleek! The UA Console app is easy to use and gives you a lot of options and things to play with when monitoring, tracking, etc. The few UAD plugins I've bought so far sound superb and I have little doubt that they really are the closest you can get to the real hardware, however they are pricey so definitely wait for them to go on sale. Here is the only reason I didn't give this a full 5 stars - if you are planning on using this with a Windows PC, be aware that UA's Windows WDM Thunderbolt driver is abysmal. Playback of audio from Windows apps (like Youtube in a browser, or a song in Windows Media Player for example) has been fine for me, but if you are trying to record audio into a Windows app such as Skype or Zoom or Discord, the audio is crackly, distorted, and completely unusable. This is apparently a well-known issue that I didn't discover until after I purchased the unit - UA themselves make no obvious mention of it, and while they claim they are working on a fix, it has been an issue for years now. There is a workaround to this using a 3rd party app called Asio Link Pro that will allow the Apollo to interface with Windows using ASIO instead of WDM, and this has solved the issue for me for now and I can record/input into Windows apps with no issue, but hopefully UA will come through with an actual fix. Again, this only affects using the interface as an input into a Windows app and will not affect anything you do with the Apollo inside of a DAW, as the DAW will use ASIO and not WDM drivers - it has been flawless in Reaper for me so far. Final thoughts - before you invest in this, I definitely recommend getting all the other fundamentals down first: good monitors, an acoustically treated space (also can't say enough about using room correction software like Sonarworks Reference so that you're hearing a flat response), some decent mics, and experience mixing under your belt. Having these things right first will take you way farther than if you are a beginner and looking at this as your first interface. But, if you feel like you're ready to take the next step with your interface, this is an incredible piece of gear that has given my studio and productions new life!

Works on Windows, BUT...

...Be ready to do some extra configuration which will NOT be found in UAD's documentation. Your situation may differ, but hopefully this helps you if you're having a "Device Not Found" error. I have a Gigabyte x299x Designare 10G motherboard with Thunderbolt 3. In order to get the x8p to be recognized by the UAD software, I had to modify two Thunderbolt settings in the BIOS. First, I had to change the "Thunderbolt Security Level" to "No Security" and secondly, I had to enable the "Thunderbolt Boot Setting." It took me hours to figure this out as it was not clear at the beginning of troubleshooting because the Thunderbolt port/cable was working with other devices and the x8p was also showing up within Intel's Thunderbolt Control Center app. I'll leave a separate review once I have a chance to record with it, but listening to reference tracks I could definitely hear a difference in the D/A conversion compared to my MOTU 8pre. Transients are tack sharp, I noticed it mostly on kick drums. I also noticed better stereo imaging and heard sounds in the music I've never heard before. Definitely not a game-changer, but still nice to hear a little quality improvement after an investment. 5-stars for playback sound quality, but minus 1 star for the troubleshooting in the beginning.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Sean DeLeon

I’ve been recording local artists and bands in Nashville for close to 8 years, and I needed an interface that could cover a wide range of situations. I recorded guitars, vocals, drums, percussion, synths, keys, (you name it) through my Apollo x8p on many productions. It really sounded great. Not only can you change your preamp to model popular classic gear, you can record with virtually no latency. It was truly a game changer for me.
