A Powerful Arsenal of Guitar Tone

Do you want to plug in and rock? Or maybe you like tweaking parameters until you’ve dialed in the perfect sound. Either way, the Line 6 Spider V 60 MkII has something to offer every player — it can conjure up nearly any tone you can imagine. The Spider V 60 MkII offers several advantages over its predecessor, including Classic Speaker mode, which puts the organic feel of a traditional guitar amp at your fingertips, and Artist and Iconic Song presets, which provide real-deal building blocks for your own signature tone. Whether you’re into raging metal, ambient soundscapes, or chiming pop, plug into the Spider V 60 MkII — there’s a universe of guitar tone waiting.

Killer presets for any occasion

The Line 6 Spider V 60 MkII is loaded with a full arsenal of presets. The quality of the presets has been vastly improved when compared to the Spider V 60 MkII’s predecessor — their modeled amp characteristics, such as compression qualities and EQ curves, have been dialed in better than ever before. What’s more, Line 6 brought in high-profile artists to help develop additional presets. This gives you spot-on Artist and Iconic Song presets, not to mention a whole bevy of classic amp presets. With over 200 killer presets — and an intuitive, color-coded control set, the Spider V 60 MkII makes it quick and easy to nail the perfect tone.

Full-range speaker system

No conventional guitar amp, Line 6 spec'd the Spider V 60 MkII with a full-range speaker system that includes a custom-designed guitar speaker plus a high-frequency driver. The benefit here is that your amp will sound fantastic with not only electric and acoustic guitars, modeled amps, and effects — but you can also plug in a full mix and hear it in high fidelity. Want to go old school? No problem. The Spider V 60 MkII’s Classic Speaker mode automatically shuts off its high-frequency driver and cab/mic modeling, yielding an organic sound and feel that seemed comfortable and familiar to the traditional-minded guitarists here at Sweetwater when we ran it through its paces.

Useful extras you'll appreciate

Line 6 packed their Spider V MkII amps with useful extras that you'll appreciate — and rely on. With the Spider V 60 MkII, you'll take performance and practice to the next level. Its built-in wireless receiver accommodates a Relay G10 transmitter (sold separately), enabling you to cut the cord. Maintain perfect tuning with the onboard tuner. Sharpen your time with a built-in metronome. Craft a layered performance with a 60-second looper. And get into the groove by playing along with pro-quality drum loops. All in, Line 6's Spider V MkII amps are the best Spiders ever — and they offer tremendous value. You need one.

It Rocks

It's been many years since I played in a Rock band. Having recently picked up the guitar again, I read reviews on this amp and decided to give it a go. After having used it some now, I have decided that it's the best little amp I have ever personally owned. Sure, I've played through bigger but I never owned them. I especially like that I can lay down tracks directly from the amp to my DAW. Worth every penny. Yes, I would recommend it.
Music background: Started playing again a couple years ago after a 40 year retirement.

Spider 5 mk2

I had a spider 3 back in the day that sounded great. Getting back into playing I found myself
looking at line6 again. Couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Pretty Awesome

These amps get a bad rap, probably because every teenager who wanted to play nu-metal covers in the early 2000s used a Spider. I was one of those teenagers, I had the Spider II 75 back in 2003. At the time I thought it was pretty great for what it was, and I actually kept that amp for about 7 years.

Since then, I've owned a few tube amps and have played through a slew of them in various places. I've also owned Line 6's POD GO and a couple of other floor modelers that use IRs; I also own some software plugins that use IRs.

Does this amp sound like a tube amp? Not quite. Does it sound as good as high-end modelers that use IRs? Not quite.

That said, I've also owned a Boss Katana and a couple of Blackstar's modeling amps. I've demoed the most recent Fender Mustang series, as well as the Line 6 Catalyst and virtually every other current generation modeling amp. In my opinion, this thing absolutely blows the other modeling amps out of the water, including the company's own Catalyst series. The modulations and delays are absolutely pristine quality; I would say they are indiscernible from the Helix / HX series effects. The reverbs are decent - not the best I've ever heard and not quite as good as the HX series but definitely solid and the spring emulations are particularly good. The drive pedal emulations leave a bit to be desired but I'm more of an "amp drive" kind of guy and the sheer number of amp emulations built into this thing covers any possible gain setting you can imagine. A lot of folks have stated that they like the stock presets - I actually think most of them are terrible - but if you use the app and deep-dive into the settings you can get some pretty amazing tones. I've found the key is to roll off the treble frequencies as much as you can stand without getting things muddy, and boost the drive/volume settings on the amp. I've got a patch with a Vibrolux amp, spring reverb, optical tremolo and a bit of slapback delay from a Boss DM-2 emulation and it's shockingly close to the real thing. You can still tell that it doesn't have quite the same "oomph" or sparkle and dynamic feel as a real tube amp, but it's darn close. In a mix or live setting mic'd up, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference at all.

I decided to sell the POD GO and move towards a modeling amp because I was getting "option paralysis" with that unit and wanted something a bit more "plug-and-play" for playing around the house. I don't play live much anymore and most of my guitar playing these days is through plugins within a DAW through headphones, but sometimes you still like to feel air move. This checks all of the boxes and can literally be plug-and-play once you have your patches set; the built-in tuner works great as well. The app is terrific and very intuitive, and definitely the way to coax the best tones out of this amp. I've literally never turned a knob on mine other than the volume knob. I actually was planning to sell the POD GO and swap to a Catalyst since those amps feature the HX technology, but I tried a few of them and found them to sound boxy and "woofy" compared to the Spider series; the Catalyst app is also clunkier and your options are very limited on that amp. I've enjoyed the Katanas that I've either owned or played through, but the app is terrible in comparison and to my ears they suffer from the same boxiness and "woofy" issue that plagues the Catalyst. Also, no built-in tuner on the Katana is a head-scratcher for me. The Katana has a huge following and seems to be almost the "default" solid state amp these days; your mileage may vary.

I should mention that I only play this in "classic" speaker mode which makes a world of difference. The MKI series of this amp that only had the "full range" mode sounded disappointing to my ears.

I really enjoy this amp. In my mind, it's like a compact, enhanced version of the old Vetta series - which was my dream amp at one point in time. If you are a tube purist to the core you may not like this amp because it's not quite there, but the pristine effects, deep tweakability and compact form factor push this one over the edge as far as I'm concerned. It's very nearly the perfect amp for me personally; I don't foresee getting rid of this unless Line 6 rolls out a 6th version that is markedly better than this one. I don't gig at the moment but would not hesitate to use this amp live; a footswitch and a Sennheiser 906 or 609 mic and you could pretty much play this anywhere.

A versatile modeling amp with many features, at a reasonable price point

This amp is exactly what I was looking for. I play a variety of guitars solely in my living room (not a public performer and not in a band). I was seeking a modeling amp at a reasonable price that could offer a large variety of guitar tones without the need for many separate pedals, plus any other bells and whistles it might offer. This amp checked all the boxes and then some. One of the Sweetwater demo videos says that if you can think of a guitar tone, it's inside this amp, and that has proven to be entirely true. The huge library of presets, which includes artist and even individual song presets, take you everywhere from pure clean tones to heavy metal crunch and everything in between, accommodating both electric and acoustic guitars. And you have total control over the settings of any preset so you can tweak it to your liking, or start from scratch choosing your preferred amp model, stomp box, delay, reverb, etc. There is also a library of realistic sounding drum beats, a 60-second looper, and a convenient built-in tuner. For volume, the amp can get very loud and can keep up if you're playing in a small combo band; and turning down to low volume does not alter your tone settings. An unexpected benefit is the Spider V Remote program that provides connectivity between the amp and your computer or phone. With it, you can clearly see and adjust your tone settings directly on the well-organized display screen. This is much easier than working from the small screen on the amp itself. I can think of only two minor issues: 1) the power switch is on the back, which is a slight nuisance. Why not put it on the front panel? And 2) there is no way to adjust the tempo of the drum recordings. There is a metronome feature which can be set for tempo, but the drums cannot. On the plus side, there are many drum recordings in the library, so you are likely to find one with a tempo that suits you. Overall, this amp has been a joy to use and so far I've only scratched the surface of what it can do. Looking forward to countless hours of fun playing around with it.
