Two Classic Fuzz Effects + Octave

Fuzz fans of all camps will delight in all the EarthQuaker Devices Hoof Reaper V2 has on tap. This 3-in-1 pedal combines two indispensable fuzz circuits — a sludgy green Russian and a '60s silver Briton — plus an analog octave-up effect for synthy, screaming leads and embellishments. All three effects can be used independently or stacked for a total of seven unique tone injections. V2 of this pedal features silent relay switching for superior life and more comfortable feel underfoot, as well as EarthQuaker's Flexi-switch on the octave effect for either momentary or latching operation.

The Hoof: EarthQuaker's flagship fuzz

The EarthQuaker Devices Hoof, based on a popular green Russian fuzz, soaks your tone in a slurry of germanium and silicon transistors. Its smooth midrange contour and rich sustain make the Hoof a classic for acid and slacker rock. Tone and Shift controls serve up a massive helping of tone-shaping options — especially in the midrange — delivering everything from classic scooped to modern boosted mids.

Tone Reaper: designed after a 3-knob Bender

The vintage-styled Tone Reaper fuzz is another silicon/germanium hybrid. It's based on the later 3-knob version of a popular British fuzz from the '60s and '70s. Its spitty, sputtery response grows into a ghastly growl as you crank the gain. The Tone Reaper packs more of a bite than the Hoof, giving you extra aggression when you need to shake up a mix.

Analog octave-up effect with Flexi-switch

The addition of an independent octave effect takes the Hoof Reaper V2 from great to grand. On its own or paired with either or both of the fuzzes, the octave adds that classic screaming, synthy high end of some early fuzzes — an effect that the Hoof and Tone Reaper pedals don't have on their own. Sweetwater testers thoroughly enjoyed the Flexi-switch: tap to latch on and off, or press and hold for a momentary burst.

EarthQuaker Devices Hoof Reaper V2 Fuzz/Octave Pedal Features:

  • 2 classic fuzz effects plus an analog octave-up effect
  • Stack or solo for a total of 7 unique sounds
  • The germanium/silicon Hoof is smooth and contoured
  • Shift control adds midrange content unavailable in the coveted Russian fuzz
  • The silicon/germanium Tone Reaper is aggressive and sputtery
  • Adds bite when paired with the Hoof
  • Octave control with Flexi-switch (momentary/latch operation) adds classic fuzz scream
  • True bypass silent relay switching is comfortable underfoot
  • 6mA draw — sips power
  • Powered by a standard center-negative 2.1mm 9-volt adapter

Hoof Reaper

I'm no connoisseur but this is the best octave fuzz pedal I've ever had the pleasure to use. It's very versatile and can cover a wide range of sounds/genres; the Reaper side alone can cover a hearty overdrive-type of sound all the way to Mudhoney. The Hoof side is much more dense and great for sludgy Sabbath/doom type of stuff. The octave function works great with both sides separately as well as both together - even on it's own it's a fun effect to use. I'd say if you're looking for an all-inclusive fuzz pedal, this should be on your list.

I traded an original Green Muff for THIS

Hands down one of my absolute favorite fuzz pedals (and I own quite a few in each flavor of fuzz). My favorite truly is the hoof side. It's one of the most versatile big muff esq pedals out there which I have always had this love hate relationship with. I love the way my heros make them sound but could never get those same tones myself even with legitimate muffs. I owned an original tall font green Russian and liked it but once I played through this, it instantly clicked and I could get every single big muff esq sound I had in my head! Black keys, white stripes, Gilmore, you get the idea. It's also the only muff I have had that actually cleans up superbly with guitar volume! To where it's almost like a smooth amp like drive. I've never heard or had a muff do such things! The octave is super useful too! I've had my love hate history with them as well for the same reasons but it truly works well and sits perfect in a mix. I admittedly do not use the reaper side that much but it is a great fuzz meets distortion and is there when I need it. Definitely worth the even trade and would recommend this to any fuzz nut like myself out there!

Big Muff meets Tone Bender with a vintage octave up

My two favorite songs to rip on my favorite fuzz are "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" by the White Stripes on the Hoof side, and "Warpigs" on the Reaper Side.

If you know those sounds, you know this pedal.

Probably my Be-All End-All Pedal

I've seen quite a few people scoff at this pedal due to the price but you're really getting an insane value here. If you were to buy each pedal separately you'd be looking at forking out about $450-$470 brand new and having all three in one space saves up two power supply slots and requires 2 fewer patch cables. Now, that may not sound like a lot but it all adds up when you start building your board and combo pedals can be lifesavers. Of course, all this would be meaningless if the pedal didn't sound fantastic and it absolutely does. You can use all three effects in any conceivable order and any possible combination and they all go together perfectly, like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry icecream. Do yourself a favor and just get this pedal. Don't settle for anything less, save up and get what you deserve, the EQD Hoof Reaper

Versatile distortion pedal

I purchased this pedal as my one distortion pedal. The pedal can produce distortion ranging from punk to rich-dark distortion and fuzz. With the dials turned down it could even be used as overdrive. I have a separate overdrive pedal. I subtracted half a star because of the octave button. When the hoof and reaper settings are set correctly, the octave switch can create an interesting rumbling sounding distortion which can be changed up. However, when the dials are not set up optimally and the guitar level falls below a certain point, the two pedals can cancel out some of the signal so that it is much much quieter. Once I figured out the optimum settings for my rig, I haven't had to change anything and am super happy with the range of sounds between a combination of these three switches. I mention my experience with the octave dial because this is not mentioned in any manual and I had to troubleshoot this. I could easily have talked to someone from Sweetwater but I'm stubborn and wanted to figure it out myself.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Isaac Melton

I've been a guitar player for seven years, and a massive pedal nerd for about five of those. There are several distinct fuzz tones I use frequently, and I grew tired of having three different fuzz pedals taking up precious space on my power supply... until the Hoof Reaper solved that issue. This pedal gives me all the fuzz tones I need (plus the standalone octave effect) and then some: from Jack White, to Gary Clark Jr., to Dan Auerbach - and it only takes up a single spot on my board. Nearly every setting is useful, even as it gets more aggressive. This is definitely the last fuzz I'll ever need.
